As COVID–19 changes the way we move and use public space, citizens and governments around the world adapt to this new situation. Recently the Flemish Government has set up a dedicated Sustainable Mobility Toolbox that aims to inspire local authorities to take measures for further stimulating walking and cycling in response to the COVID–19 crisis.
The Flemish NGO Pedestrian Movement, the Flemish Government and the Flanders Party have set up the program “Summer Streets” enabling citizens to claim road space as holiday zones to enjoy a safe and accessible ‘staycation’.
Citizens can sign up to initiate car-free streets for play, greening, mobility or leisure activities and receive a free “action pack” that includes banners, window posters, sidewalk stickers and chalk.
More than 500 streets have registered with the program. Happy holidays!
